How to play
A picture is cut into a 4x4 grid of sixteen pieces and the pieces are scattered
across the tray. Drag each one back to where it belongs. A piece that lands within
twenty pixels of its home snaps into place and stays there; the puzzle is finished
when all sixteen have settled.
- Press and drag a piece — picks it up and moves it. Pieces already
placed are locked and cannot be picked up again.
- Release — drops the piece. If it is close enough to its slot it
snaps home, otherwise it stays where you left it.
- New Puzzle — deals a fresh picture and re-scatters every piece.
Scoring
There is no points score. The counters are Placed, which runs from
0 to 16, and Moves, which increments every time you release a piece
whether or not it landed correctly. Sixteen moves is therefore a perfect round, and
the move count is the only measure of how cleanly you solved it.
Tips
- The snap tolerance is twenty pixels, so a piece does not need to be exact — get it
close and let it settle rather than nudging repeatedly, since every release costs a
move.
- Each piece is tinted by its row, with lower rows darker. Sorting the loose pieces
into light and dark before placing any of them makes the grid easier to read.
- Work the corners and edges first. They have the fewest neighbours to confuse them
and give you fixed reference points for the middle.
- Placed pieces are locked, so an early mistake cannot be undone — if you are unsure
between two slots, park the piece to one side and come back to it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play this on a phone?
Yes. On a touch screen the game shows on-screen buttons, and games played with a
mouse work by tapping.
Why can I not move a piece I already placed?
Placing is final in this version. Once a piece snaps home it is marked placed and
the drag handler ignores it, which keeps a finished corner from being knocked loose
while you work nearby.
Is it the same picture every time?
No. New Puzzle picks a fresh image and generates new colours for the pieces, so the
layout you learn in one round will not help you in the next.
