How to play
A sprite editor on a square grid. Choose a grid size, pick a colour from the palette, and paint cells one at a time or by dragging across them. There is no score โ the output is the picture, which you can export as a PNG.
- Draw โ press on a cell to colour it, and keep the button held while moving to paint a line of cells.
- Erase โ the same drag behaviour, setting cells back to the empty background colour.
- Fill โ one click floods every connected cell of the same colour as the one you clicked.
- Grid โ switch between 16x16, 24x24 and 32x32. Changing it rebuilds the grid and clears your work.
- Palette swatch or colour picker โ click any of the 24 swatches, or use the picker for a custom colour. Either switches you back to the Draw tool.
- Clear โ rebuilds the current grid empty.
- Export โ saves the picture as pixel-art.png at 16 real pixels per cell.
Scoring
Nothing is scored. The grid opens at 24x24 and its cell size is worked out from the window width up to a 560 pixel canvas, so it shrinks to fit a narrow screen. Fill compares exact colour values and spreads to the four orthogonal neighbours only, never diagonals. Export always writes at 16 pixels per cell, so a 32x32 grid becomes a 512 pixel image.
Tips
- Pick the grid size before you start. Switching it later wipes the canvas with no warning and no undo.
- 16x16 is the size classic game sprites used, and it is much easier to finish than 32x32.
- Drag painting only follows the mouse while the button is held. If a stroke stops halfway, the button was released over a gap between cells.
Frequently asked questions
Can I undo?
No. There is no undo history, so use the eraser to fix mistakes, or Clear to start over.
How big is the exported image?
Each cell becomes a 16 by 16 block of real pixels, so a 24x24 grid exports as a 384 pixel square PNG called pixel-art.png.
Can I play this on a phone?
Yes โ on a touch screen the game shows on-screen buttons, and games played with a mouse work by tapping.
