Goal

Hearts is a trick-taking game where you want the fewest penalty points. You play against 3 computer opponents. Hands are dealt until someone reaches 100 points — the player with the lowest score then wins the game.

Passing

Before each hand, everyone chooses 3 cards to pass. The direction rotates: left, then right, then across, then a hand with no pass — repeating from there.

Playing a trick

• Whoever holds the 2 of clubs after passing leads the first trick, and must lead it.
• Follow the suit that was led if you can. If you can't, play anything.
• Hearts can't be led until a heart has been played on an earlier trick ("broken") — unless your hand is nothing but hearts.
• Nobody may play a heart or the queen of spades on the very first trick, unless every card left in their hand is one of those.
• Highest card of the led suit wins the trick and leads the next one.

Scoring a hand

Every heart taken is worth 1 point; the queen of spades is worth 13 points. Points go to whoever won the trick they were played in — you want to take as few as possible.

Shooting the moon

If one player takes every penalty card in a hand — all 13 hearts and the queen of spades — that player scores 0 for the hand instead, and 26 points are added to every opponent's score.
